We were granted a 501 (c) (6) status in Omaha. Unfortunately,
donations are not tax exempt to our organization unless they are
written off as a business expense. A 501 (c) (6) is a non-profit
organization, but it is considered to be for the benefit of its
members (the growers) instead of for the general public. I think that
you will have to justify how the market benefits the public welfare -
promotes nutrition, makes fresh food available to low income families,
promotes economic development, promotes the downtown area or inner
city, etc.
Good luck!
