Zachary
i hope you will share all you learn from this survey
Mark

The Westwood Farmers Market (Los Angeles) has a mild recycling
program going.
There are recycling containers available to customers.
We don't prohibit any materials.
We provide waste receptacles.

I'm glad to hear about Boulder's program as people have mentioned it.
Some customers seem very interested in it.
Though i notice they don't ask supermarkets to be low waste, just
farmers markets.
Perhaps we can all get a grant to make it happen.
I gauge the actual customer demand by how many customers bring cloth
bags to the market,
and currently that is a small percentage.
Hopefully, we can all improve in this area.

Hi all,

In March, I sent out the following request for information on farmers
market waste management, As it is my understanding that this list
has doubled or tripled in size since then, I am sending this out
again in hopes of receiving additional feedback from some of the
newer list subscribers. Thanks.

Original info request:

I am researching the topic of waste management at farmers markets,
and I am interested in feedback from any and all of you. I will give
you some starter questions, but I am interested in any ideas and
experiences you would like to share with me about market waste
management. Please email me directly at zach at cowswithguns.com. No
need to clog up this list with responses.

Does your market have prepared food vendors? If so, how do you
handle the waste they generate?
Does your market have a recycling program?
How does your market deal with compostable waste?
Do you require your vendors to haul out their own waste, or do you
provide receptacles?
Does your market prohibit any packaging or serving materials, such as
plastic bags, styrofoam containers, non-compostable plates, etc.?
Does your market have a "zero-waste" program in place?

I appreciate any information you can provide.

Thank you,

Zachary Lyons

This season, the Longmont Farmers' Market, (10 mi. north of Boulder, CO)
received a grant from Boulder County's Eco-Cycle to implement a zero-
waste
program. The grant subsidized the recycling/compost containers, signs
and
staff to help customers with the changes. It also subsidized the cost
of the
flatware which was more than 20% of the cost of non-compostable
flatware.
We have had one market with program in place and the customers (and
media)
seemed to be very pleased with the program.
