Subject: [COMFOOD:] City policies on Farmers Markets

A network of neighbourhood farmers markets in Toronto, Canada is currently
undergoing consultation with the City Parks Department to establish a policy
for markets in parks. (We may be looking in the future to a broader policy
since some of the markets in the city are in parks, others in civic squares,
and still others in private parking lots).

We are seeking info from farmers markets about current City policies so we
can learn from best practices.

Below are a few specific questions we are hoping to get info on but please
also send any other info you think is important:

- Are market permits required? What City Department(s) must you get approval
from to start and operate a market? What is entailed in the process? What
are the fees?
- At farmers markets in parks are farmers able to drive their trucks (and
sell) on turf?
- Do policies cover details of individual market operations (for example, do
they prohibit re-selling by farmers of products produced by their
neighbours) or do they allow for various models/market rules?
- Does the city provide any specific supports for farmers markets?
