Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market in Orleans, IN, began as a very small market and spaces were not an issue at first. During peak season (after 7 years), we now have over 60 vendors, so spaces became an issue. We have a steering committee made up of vendors (producers/bakers/crafters), volunteers and Board members to help make decisions regarding the market. Because we have many vendors represented on the committee, our vendors have been very gracious about decisions we've had to make regarding our market. Our market charges $5 per vendor per year. We run on donations from market visitors and volunteer power. Our vendors are also asked to make a donation when they have a "good day" but we don't keep track of what individual vendors donate. It's on the honor system and we're doing very well. Our producers, bakers and crafters have their spaces mixed. I believe the vendors prefer it that way. It also makes the market more interesting to customers. Imagine going to a mall where all of the shoe stores were right together. Our Market is located around the perimeter (actually 3 sides) of a park. The Town of Orleans decided to close off one of the streets adjacent to the park so that we could use the street for events and vendors to set up mainly for safety reasons. Vendors who sell from their trucks or buggies are the only ones allowed to be on that street. In other words, vendors who sell on the park side must unload and park elsewhere. Horses are unhitched and walked to a neighboring lot with shade and then hitched to a tree.
Here is an exerpt from our Vendor Guidelines regarding spaces:
Established vendors were grandfathered into their customary spaces from past seasons.
Vendors will be assigned a permanent space when they register, if they so choose; otherwise, they will occupy a vacant space upon contacting the Host Tent.
If a grandfathered space becomes available, that space will be offered on the basis of a point system. (See Vendor Points below.)
Vendors must arrive at the market to set up no later than 7:30 a.m.
Vendors not arriving by 7:30 a.m. will forfeit their reserved space for that day. During the month of October, vendor arrival time will be 8:30 a.m.
Vendors should be ready to sell by 8:00 a.m. to accommodate customers and to ensure credit for the days attendance.
Produce vendors get 2 points per week they are in attendance.
Crafters/bakers get 1 point per week they are in attendance.
If a grandfathered space becomes available it will be offered to the vendor with the most points in decreasing order.
The Host Tent keeps a record of vendor points.
Sincerely,
Alice Wootton, volunteer market master/treasurer & HomeGrown Board member

My market is pretty small - never more than about 30 vendors there at one time. Few, if any, vendors are there at every market.
Thus, there are no assigned spaces - it's first come, first served.

Greetings, all:
I'm writing to ask if any of you have done a complete market re-set - a
complete re-ordering of who goes where at your market during the
offseason. From whom did you gather input? How did vendors react? How
did you help patrons and vendors make the transition?
I'm also curious - for those whose markets include art/crafts, where are
they in relation to produce/food vendors? Are art/craft vendors in a
separate area from the food?
Thanks!
Lisa
